The Goodness of This Day

Happy days
Sad 70s songs
Throwing a green football
On a landscaped lawn
Can't play as long
Am not a quite as strong
What a blessing
To see the next generation
Get along

For all this reminiscing
About the good old days
So much was lived
In disfunctional haze
Budweiser pop tops
Added to the rage

WWII vets
With Archie Bunker chairs
Vietnam hippies
Growing long hair
Dazed and Confused
Sharing Quaalude stares

Give me some pluralism
And huggers of trees
Outrage about plastic bags
Blown to the ocean by a summer breeze
A shallower theology with more people
Hitting their knees

Give me health food
Filled with sugar
In plastic bowls
Give me women
Too strong
Way too bold

Give me more marriages
Where they have and they hold
Give me Love
Give me laughter
Give me a vision
For the joy of the hereafter
Give me friendship to fill my days
Lord give me wisdom
To see the goodness of this day!

My Flight

I may be the eldest
On this plane
The one with the longest history
In both Sun and Rain

As I look upon silver cubed panelled wings
My heart sings

For the home I left
And to the one I arrive
Abode hearts
To which I strive
To teach and model
Grace and Love
To reflect the kindness
Of the God above

For though I am the eldest
I think my remaining days
Will be many
But if they are not
I have been happy with little
Yet
Gifted with plenty

A turbulent shift
Awakes even the young
To mortality
A chuckle floats
Through my loose front teeth
An old man still has
A boyhood joy

Flying to seeing my grandsons
Ain't that sweet
Can't wait to play
With those plastic toys
