In a country with
A substance abuse epidemic

What is the polemic

They have to hit bottom
That is what is wrong

But button is often a six foot grave
As providers fight
Through bureaucratic haze

When we are trained to engage
A disease baffling to mankind

One that is only healed
Through human connection
And time

We need a Higher Power
Who shakes our mind

To sanity

And emotional control
Often too late
After the drugs and alcohol
Have taken their toll

In payment

Of lost relationships
Money
The girl you called honey
The boy you called sonny

I Digress

My words need a rest
Trying to pass the kindness test
In a world that has lost its way
It is even controversial to say
