First Song

I heard your first song today
Sung before you could speak words

A beautiful confident song
Learned before words taught you
Singing without words was absurd

It was a birthday effort
Sung with joy to begin a new year
Before you knew new years began

We shouted applause
At your song with words not clear
I think we would all sing more
If we experienced that kind of cheer

So sing Sweet Hazel Bug
When words meet your voice
And critics make singing a choice

When I heard you first sing
It was the most natural of thing
To hear a melody move
From heart to vocal chords

I hope when you know words
You will be assured
That singing is one of life's
Great rewards

Deborah Boucher.     For Hazel
